Our Scooters » Starting out with your new electric scooter
Licence
Anyone who has a full driving licence for cars issued before February 1 2001 can ride a Gobrussels scooter without L-plates or any extra training - though we think it's a good idea to complete the Compulsory Basic Training course. For more information contact the Driving Standards Agency on 0115 901 2500.
Insurance
Electric scooters are classified as 50cc mopeds for insurance. Your premium will depend on your age, where you live, your claims history and the active measures you are taking to reduce the risks. There are three main types of insurance cover:
Third Party Only (TPO)
If your scooter is stolen or damaged you will not be entitled to claim. If you cause damage to a third party, they may claim from your policy.
Third Party Fire & Theft (TPFT)
If your scooter is stolen or catches fire you will be able to make a claim. If your incur damage to your scooter, accidental or otherwise, you will not be able to make a claim.
Fully Comprehensive (FC)
You will be able to make a claim for any damage or theft.
Service
For most riders, an annual service should be sufficient to keep your scooter in perfect working order, especially if you carry out the basic ongoing checks such as ensuring the batteries are fully charged, the tyres are at the correct pressure and the brakes are sufficiently tight.
Security
By taking sensible steps, you can dramatically reduce the risk of losing your scooter. For a start, always remove the key when you park and apply the steering lock if your scooter has one. Park somewhere visible and invest in a D-lock, a disc lock or an armoured chain. If you park your scooter in a garage you may wish to consider securing it to a ground anchor.
Storage and Power
It sounds obvious but you should consider where you will park your electric scooter and how you will keep it charged. Ideally, you should park somewhere dry (covers are effective and inexpensive). Conventional 13 Amp sockets are relatively cheap to install. Some London car parks offer free parking and power for electric vehicles.
Clothing and Accessories
You'll need a helmet (the best you can afford), weatherproof jacket, trousers and gloves, and probably a top box. Around £200-£300 should cover the lot. Helmets are compulsory and must be fastened at all times while riding.
